Eucalyptus gumnuts on a branch

About Gumnutly

Heads up: Gumnutly is reader-supported. Some links on this site are, or may become, affiliate links. If you buy through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. How we make money

The best of Australia, curated.

Gumnutly is a gift and souvenir guide for three kinds of people:

  • Aussies buying local, who’d rather their money went to a maker down the road than a warehouse overseas.
  • Expats missing home, and the family and friends who post them care packages.
  • Visitors and overseas gift-givers, who want something more meaningful than a souvenir-shop koala.

We named the site after the gumnut, the woody little capsule on a eucalyptus tree. It’s small, tough, unmistakably Australian, and it travels well. That’s what we look for in a gift, too.

What we do

We write gift guides and regional guides that are actually useful. That means telling you who a gift suits, where the maker says it’s made, how it’ll cope with the post, and what to check before you buy. We also write about Margaret River and the South West of Western Australia, a region with a lot of small producers worth knowing about.

How we choose what to feature

  • Origin claims come from the maker. We only describe a product as Australian-made, or made in a particular place, when the maker or merchant says so, and we link to that statement. We don’t use the Australian Made logo on the site, because it belongs beside individually licensed products, not on a publisher’s pages.
  • We don’t invent anything. No made-up reviews, star ratings, testimonials or “we tested” claims. If our editors have personally used a product, we say so plainly. If they haven’t, we don’t pretend.
  • No prices in the copy. Prices change too often. We link to the merchant so you can see the current price.
  • Indigenous art and products: we only feature products from businesses that are verified as Indigenous-owned, or that are properly licensed from Indigenous artists. We don’t use “Aboriginal-style” designs in our own branding.
  • Commissions don’t buy a spot. Some of our links may earn us a commission. That helps pay for the site, but it never decides what’s on a list.

Who’s behind it

Gumnutly is written by a small team of editors who love Australian-made things and get a bit too excited about a good farmers’ market. You’ll see “our editors” or “the Gumnutly team” on our articles, rather than individual bylines.

Gumnutly is operated by GENAZ PTE. LTD. (UEN 202517498Z), Singapore.

One connection you should know about: River Reach Chalet, a holiday rental in Margaret River that we mention in some of our Margaret River guides, was previously our founder’s business.

Disclosure: River Reach Chalet was previously our founder’s business, and our founder still has a financial interest in it.

We flag this next to the chalet’s first mention in every article, and we always list other places to stay alongside it. See our affiliate disclosure for more.
